Thanksgiving Break!

I did a lot of reading over Thanksgiving Break!

-I finished The Five People You Meet in Heaven. I really liked it.

-I finally read a book by Patricia Reilly Giff. I met her at the Literature Conference at Northern Illinois University last March. I read Pictures of Hollis Woods. This book has been made into a movie that will be seen on CBS on December 2nd at 8:00pm (Central Time). I'm eager to watch the movie because I enjoyed the book so much! The picture at the top of this blog entry is of Patricia Reilly Giff and Mrs. Llewellyn in March. If you click on the picture, you will see a larger version of the picture.

-I read the second book in the Gregor series. It is called Gregor and the Prophecy of Bane. It was awesome! I started reading it and couldn't put the book down!! I can't wait to get the rest of the Gregor series in the library at school!! I think I like the Gregor books as much as I like the Harry Potter books!! Until I get the books at JRT... if you want to read them, and find out why I like these books so much, you will have to head over to the Fountaindale Library to check them out there.

-The Spiderwick Chronicles are being made into a movie that will be out in the theaters this winter. I read the first book in the series. It was very interesting. I am eager to read the rest of the books to find out what happens next!

-We have the first four books in the Dragon Slayers Academy in our library. I decided to read the first book. Has anyone else read them? What do you think?

-The book I'm still reading is called The Lightning Thief. It is by Rick Riodan. It takes place in modern times but includes mythology from long ago. In school I was not excited to read Greek Mythology, so reading this book is taking me a little longer than I had expected because it is a topic that is not one of my favorites. This book is full of excitement!

The Five People You Meet in Heaven

I'm taking a slight break from books for children, and reading a novel that was written for adults. It is called The Five People You Meet in Heaven by Mitch Albom. This book is on the "Abe" list, which is like the Caudill list, but for high school students. I just started it yesterday, and I am more than half way through it. It will just be a slight break, because I will probably have it finished by the end of the day! Then I'm back to books for kids! I decided to read this because I heard about it during the Library class I just finished.

My favorite Caudills

---The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane by Kate DiCamillo (*** I'm glad I read this because I like the author, but it was not one of my favorites this year.)

---The Old Willis Place: A Ghost Story by Mary Downing Hahn (***** I LOVED this story! If you like spooky ghost stories, this one is for you!)

---The Penderwicks: A Summer Tale of Four Sisters, Two Rabbits, and a Very Interesting Boy
by Jeanne Birdsall (***** I enjoyed reading this story about a vacation when I was on my very own vacation. )

---Princess Academy
by Shannon Hale (**** A great story for anyone who likes stories about princesses and adventures!)

---The Ruins of Gorlan
by John Flanagan (***** I can't wait to read the second story! This book is full of adventure!)

---The Schwa Was Here by Neal Shusterman (****** So far, this is my favorite Caudill this year! What a great story for boys and girls!)

I plan on reading Shakespear's Secret and MVP by Thanksgiving.

***What Caudill Award Books have you read? What did you think of them?

The Higher Power of Lucky

I've just finished reading "The Higher Power of Lucky" written by Susan Patron. It won the Newberry Award in the spring of 2007. This book had a lot of controversy surrounding it when it won the Newberry Award. However, it is important to read the ENTIRE book before making a judgment about it. I enjoyed reading this story, and can see why it was picked to be the Newberry Award Winner. Currently, it is not available at our library, but a copy will be purchased when I place my next order. In the mean time, head over to the Fountaindale Library to check out a copy.

Gregor the Overlander

I just finished reading Gregor the Overlander by Suzanne Collins! It was a great book! If you like reading books full of adventure, this one is for you! Who couldn't resist larger than human sized crawlers, spinners, and flyers?? I can't wait to read the second book in this series. The book is in our school library. You can find it in the Fiction area "COL". If you have read this book, tell me what you thought! I give this book 5 stars!!!!
